NMA orders immediate closure of Convenant Clinic in Calabar
The Nigerian Medical Association in Cross River has ordered the immediate closure of Convenant Clinic over unlicensed medical practice of the facility.
Chairman of NMA, Dr Agam Ayuk, made this known in Calabar when fielding question from newsmen over the recent death of Prince Otu Duke.
The news of the death of the SA to Governor Ayade on Waste Management, Prince Otu Duke, has not only cause a din but has also caused a defamation of the image of Covenant Clinic in particular and all private hospitals and clinics in general.
Recall that Prince Otu Duke recently passed on at Asi Ukpo Medical facility after a hernia operation at Covenant Clinic located at 22 Ekpo Eyo Street off Uwanse Street, Calabar.
As the news about his death began to trend, some Journalists went as far as visiting the Covenant Clinic at 22 Ekpo Eyo Street to find out about his death and the clinic therein. Findings revealed that the said clinic (a flat in peoples residence) is neither a picture of where health care services can be provided nor a premise where a sick patient can be assured of survival.
On arrival at the clinic, the Journalist met the absence of Dr. Okoho Offiong, the medical doctor in charge of the clinic.
After waiting for some time Dr. Okoho drove in and was engaged in a conversation by the newsmen. Dr. Okoho first and foremost vindicated the clinic of any blame in regards to Prince Otu’s death.
In his words, the patient was in stable condition as at the time he was taken to Asi Ukpo Medical facility. He stated that referral to Asi Ukpo was because the patient had developed mild signs of partial stroke which could have been triggered by his diabetic condition. Against medical advice, the family insisted the he should be at the clinic.
He further said that he couldn’t have carried out this process since funds could only be provided for by the family. He added that their first referral to Dr. Iwara was turned down hence the choice of Asi Ukpo, and as at the time he was taken down there, all his vital organs were checked and were in order.
I even offered to surrender the clinic oxygen cylinder which Prince Otu was placed on. Asi Ukpo rejected my oxygen cylinder and rather said they will use theirs which was not provided by them for the patient to used. Dr.Okoho concluded.
The newsmen also enquired about the numbers of deaths recorded so far in the clinic as in the last three months, Dr. Okoho response was that only two cases excluding Prince Otu Duke which he said lost his life at Asi Ukpo.
Notwithstanding, when our reporter attempted to find out the other part of the story from Asi Ukpo Diagnostic Medical Center the Head of administration Mrs. Rosemary Achunwa, reserved her comments and queried how her number was gotten and finally referred us to the family of the deceased.
When our reporter contacted Rt. Hon. Orok Duke through a phone call he expressed his anger at the direct attempt to suppress information by Dr. Okoho Offiong. In his statement, “this is the man who has called me over 22times ever since newsmen visited him. What was he calling me for? I won’t blame him because my brother went there on his own accord. How will he say my brother was okay when he was taken out of the clinic supported with oxygen? He couldn’t breath on his own, his pulse was 200/something, is that normal? His blood sugar was at 19ml for someone who was diabetic.
How can a doctor conduct a hernia surgery and recommends food for the patient whose intestines were still close? I have called the Commissioner for Health and informed her about this development. I am not asking for my brother’s life because it’s gone but I don’t want another Cross Riverian to suffer the pains my brother went through. When I listen to my brother the day before his demise, I could hear and feel one that was passing through excruciating pains.
Also, one Mrs. Margaret who also lost a love one before now in Dr. Okoho’s care has revealed through a Whatsapp chat with journalist that Dr. Okoho Offiong is not on top of his game on matters of medical surgeries as she lost her cousin in one of Dr. Okoho’s experimental surgeries. The young lady was said to be throwing up faeces and was in great pains before she passed on.
Similarly, Chief Donatus Etim also revealed he had lost a relative in the hands of Dr. Okoho before. He felt nolstagic and refused further comments, he concluded that he does not want to remember the ugly incident.
Recall that dailytrust.com.ng publication of 29th October, 2015 and tori.ng/news publication of 31th October, 2015 both revealed that Dr. Okoho was indicted in a baby trafficking business with an Abuja base lady while at Evangel Clinic. He has denied the allegation vehemently and told newsmen that the matter was taken to court but he refused disclosing the outcome of the litigation.
An unverified source has reported that he was dismissed from General Hospital Calabar due to the alarming increase of mortality rate. Also, roadside gossip has indicted him of being responsible for over 14deaths in Covenant Clinic which he said was just two. He argued that bad cases brought to the clinic cannot be counted for the clinic since the clinic became involved when life were almost ebbing out of such patients. Even though he keeps denying his involvement in the death of Prince Otu, his misery related story is of age.
However, in a follow report from Hit FM radio in one of their programmes. The Chairman of the Cross River State Medical Association, Dr. Agama Ayuk while speaking with Hit FM, confirmed that Dr. Okoho Offiong is indeed a medical/dental practitioner but the processes of licensing of the Clinic was still ongoing, a position which Dr. Okoho Offiong had admitted when questioned by newsmen about the licensing of the clinic.
Pertinent to note that all those who have lost their love ones to the cold hands of death all attribute poor hygiene and medical complications as reasons for their loses. This is a grey area that Dr. Offiong Okoho should have tackled long before now. As it stands, the Chairman of NMA Cross River State has ordered the immediate closure of the Clinic.
